El primer libro que traduzco

Hoy recibí mi ejemplar de Canícula / Dog Days, antología bilingüe del poeta salvadoreño William Archila, cuyos poemas traduje al español. ¡Estoy tan contento! Este es el primer libro que traduzco, y tenerlo en mis manos es un sueño hecho realidad. El libro ha sido editado por Red Hen Press, de Pasadena, California, y será lanzado el próximo 12 de mayo. 

En sus comentarios, los escritores y traductores Daniel Borzutzky y Orlando Ricardo Menes hacen valoraciones muy generosas de mi trabajo. Además, hoy leo en el prólogo que Brenda Cárdenas, escritora y académica, dice: «Zetino domina el balance imposible que requiere la traducción, al ser increíblemente fiel al contenido de los poemas y claro en su interpretación de dicho contenido». Y William, al promocionar el libro, escribió: «Mario Zetino … da una masterclass de traducción, al capturar los matices culturales y la auténtica voz de los textos originales». Agradezco y me siento profundamente honrado por estas valoraciones de autores tan experimentados.

La poesía de William es poderosa e inesperada y muestra el poder de la escritura para re-crearnos al escribir nuestra historia de vida, y también por el hecho mismo de escribir. Las heridas de la vida son energía emocional contenida en nosotros, y este poeta, al escribir, las mueve y las transforma en vida que fluye, y en poder para comunicarles esa vida a los demás. William: gracias inmensas por tu confianza para traducir tu poesía.

Today I received my copy of Canícula / Dog Days, a bilingual anthology by Salvadoran poet William Archila, whose poems I translated into Spanish. I’m so happy! This is the first book I’ve translated and holding it in my hands is a dream come true. The book has been published by Red Hen Press (Pasadena, CA) and will be released on May 12th.

In their comments, writers and translators Daniel Borzutzky and Orlando Ricardo Menes offer very generous praise for my work. Additionally, today I read in the foreword that writer and scholar Brenda Cárdenas says: “Zetino manages the impossible balancing act of translation by being incredibly faithful to the content of the poems and clear in his interpretation of that content.” And William, in promoting the book, wrote: “Salvadoran poet and scholar Mario Zetino ... delivers a masterclass in translation, capturing the cultural nuances and authentic voice of the original work.” I am deeply grateful and honored by these evaluations from such experienced authors.

William’s poetry is powerful and unexpected, demonstrating the power of writing to re-create us by writing our life story, and also through the very act of writing itself. Life’s wounds are emotional energy stuck within us, and this poet, through his writing, stirs and transforms them into flowing life and into the power to communicate that life to others.
